The entryway space is always a tricky fella. It’s so small and tiny, but not small enough to say there isn’t enough space for storage to remove dead space. It’s actually one of my favorite spaces to come up with ideas for, because I find it a fun challenge to try to maximize and optimize what you have to work with. I love the creativity part, and it always feels good when I can turn a simple problem into something clever and useful.
There are so many things you can do with this so-called dead space like an entryway, from adding hooks to hang coats to creating a spot for shoes, bags, and everyday items in a fashionable, chic, modern way that still feels grand and expensive without spending a lot. For example, a slim IKEA HEMNES shoe cabinet, a KALLAX unit with baskets, or even a simple TJUSIG wall hook rack can instantly add function without taking up much room.
One of the biggest tricks is to create a big illusion by placing a beautiful antique mirror or a large modern mirror, depending on your style. Pair it with a few drawers for shoes or a narrow IKEA wardrobe like the PAX or PLATSA system for coats, since they come in small, medium, and larger sizes to fit different spaces and budgets.
Another great idea is creating a little nook with a small seating area so you or your kids can sit down to put shoes on before heading out. A simple bench like the IKEA HEMNES or a basic storage bench from Marketplace works great. You can decorate it with small mirrors, a big clock, or a giant artwork that you can often score cheaply at IKEA, thrift stores, or even dollar stores, then style it in whatever way you want.
Here, I gathered and summarized all the ways you can re-create your entryway space, so let me know which ones are your favorite and whether or not you’ve tried them!
